Utsavi :- Nanasaheb Shendkar

Utsavi
Nanasaheb Shendkar

Ganesh Chaturthi, which is the arrival of the city’s beloved elephant God, is eagerly awaited by thousands of devotees. This festival is celebrated with great devotion, fervour and enthusiasm in Maharashtra. Irrespective of whether it’s a sarvajanik mandal or household where the idols are installed by priests amidst chanting of mantras, everyone waits with bated breaths to show off their creativity and skills in designing a striking Makhar. A sort of unofficial competition to outshine each other in the designing the temporary pooja ghar for the idols grips the city’s passionate and enthusiastic devotees.
The hub of Ganeshotsav in Mumbai has traditionally been Lalbaug where thousands throng to catch a glimpse of the city’s most iconic Ganesh idols. Here is where Nanasaheb Shendkar runs a small unit where he conceptualises and gives shape to various designs of Makhars.
Nanasaheb was born in a peasant family in Loni Mavala village of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. With no background of arts in the family, without guidance or encouragement Nanasaheb came up through immense hardships. Having secured admission in the prestigious Sir J.J. Scholl of Arts, he mastered the art stage craft and later went on to design set for Marathi plays. During his stint in the Marathi theatre, Nanasaheb worked and excelled in stage designing and got opportunity to work with illustrious theatre personalities such as Raghuvir Talshikar, Mukherji Brothers, Sushma Shiromani. Along with set designs in theater he also designed films in around 20 to 25 films.
His journey in designing the eye-catching makhars began during his college days when he got his first assignment to design and decorate the elephant God in Uran (Digoda) where he recreated the design of Mathura temple, which was highly appreciated. He further went on to reconstruct the magic by designing the various architectural marvels, which includes creating the replica of Shivaji Maharaj’s Raigad Fort, Konkan temple, Tulsi temple, etc. Among his creations were also the traditional Rajasthani Jharokhas (Jaali set) and gigantic sets of architectural geniuses of Mor Darwaja, Haathi Darwaja, Kamal Darwaja, India Gate, Kailas Gate, Ajanta Gate, which widely respected.
For sarvajanik pandals, Nanasaheb has designed sets of 16 to 18 feet high along with making available decorative articles such as flowers, leaves, elephants, peacocks, pot, etc. And to mark the centenary celebrations of sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in 1993, he made eight to 10 feet high thermocol decoration and distributed among all the sarvajanik pandals.
The preparation for the 11-day revelry starts around 10 months prior to the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (Bhadarva Sud Chaturthi) in Ahmednagar with his team of 25 co-workers at Utsavi. For Nanasaheb, who is immensely determined his axis of strength and driving force is his wife Jijabai Shendkar. The core value system on which Nanasaheb runs Utsavi is passion and belief where profit making comes secondary to the appreciation of his art. Such is his fame that people would swarm to his place to see his artistic creation during Ganeshotsav. Celebrities like Balasaheb Thackeray, Asha Bhosale, Sharad Talwalkar, Nirmala Sawant Prabhawalkar, Jyotibhaskar Salgaonkar, Liladhar Dake have personally visited to see his creations.

Paper Makhar—The Green Temple
Until 2001, the decoration of the temporary pooja ghar during the ganpati festival thermocol was used predominantly. Nanasaheb, who used to run his own thermocol manufacturing unit for 25 years with 150 to 200 workers shut down the unit and ventured into paper makhars, says that post immersion of the idol the decoration usually ends up clogging the drains in the city and ruins the environment. With the startling adverse effects of the use of the slow biodegradable thermocol coming to the fore, Nanasaheb introduced sturdy, foldable, paper makhars in the market with a noble mission of giving back to Mother Nature what it has given to mankind. The movement that one man initiated has today gained momentum in not only Mumbai but the whole of Maharashtra.
